Overview

Most people need to provide proof of valid health insurance as part of their visa or residence permit (İkamet İzni) application.

Unlike some countries, you do not pay a central 'healthcare surcharge' directly to the government when you apply. Instead, you must purchase an approved insurance policy from an authorized provider.

Whether you need short-term travel medical insurance or comprehensive private health insurance depends on the visa you’re applying for and how long you plan to stay.

Using the healthcare system in Türkiye

You can start using your health insurance from the date your policy becomes active. This usually aligns with your travel date or the start date of your visa.

If you are waiting for a decision on your residence permit, your private insurance policy must already be active to cover any medical treatment you might need.

State Healthcare (SGK) Türkiye has a state healthcare system run by the Social Security Institution (SGK). You can generally only use this system if:

  • you have a formal Work Permit (your employer will pay your SGK premiums)

  • you have lived in Türkiye with a valid residence permit for at least 1 year and choose to pay the monthly SGK premiums yourself

Paying for extra services Depending on your private insurance policy or SGK coverage, you will usually still need to pay a portion of the cost (a co-pay) for certain services, such as:

  • prescription medicines (available from pharmacies / Eczane)

  • dental treatment

  • eye tests and glasses

  • cosmetic or aesthetic procedures

When you visit a hospital or clinic in Türkiye, you will need to prove your identity and insurance status. You must show your passport, your physical or digital insurance policy, or your Foreigner ID Card (Yabancı Kimlik Kartı) if your residence permit has been issued.
